There are about 20 species of armadillo in the world that live across most of South America, but just one species is found in the United States, the Texas state mammal, the nine-banded armadillo. The nine-banded armadillo is one of the larger species of armadillo in the world and is named for the nine bands along its body. Armadillos are highly adaptable and can live in different kinds of habitats including urban neighborhoods.
